The rise to power of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation |
During September of 1999, a series of deadly blasts in four apartment buildings killed hundreds of people. A fifth apartment building in the city of Ryazan was also targeted, but, thanks to a vigilant resident, was spared the same fate as the other four. The Russian government pointed the finger at Chechen rebels for these terrorist attacks, void of any evidence or admission of culpability from the accused. Some critics hold the view that the Russian security service carried out a coup d'état in order to get their man, Vladimir Putin, in power. Could these attacks simply be attributed to Chechen warlords, or, is there more than meets the eye? |
