Since the advent of the internet revolution, the abundant sitcoms and the light-hearted comedy shows that are everywhere to be seen on cable tv, one could be forgiven for contemplating whether or not western society has let its guard down, vacated the age of reason and drifted off course to a new-found state of bliss.
Gone are the days, it seems, when aspiring politicians got elected on merit for espousing sound policies. The theory positing that substance has become little more than an antiquated anachronism, superseded by populism, is incontrovertible. People nowadays cast their vote in the ballot box for the candidate they like best and most identify with, irrespective of credentials or suitability for office. |
